The municipality of Stäfa is a municipality in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. It is located on the right bank of Lake Zurich, the so-called Gold Coast at the south-eastern end of the Pfannenstiel in the district of Mellen in the canton of Zurich. The total area of Stäfa is 859 hectares, of which 46 % is used for agriculture, 19 % for forest, 27 % for settlements and 7% for transport.
The shores of Lake Zurich have been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, as evidenced by traces of a settlement found in Uerikon in 1937. As early as 1874, a girl's grave with various grave goods was found in the Oberredlikon district, which was dated to around 400 BC. In 1794/95, the municipality gave its name to a dispute over the political and economic disadvantage of the Zurich countryside compared to the town. Next to the plaque is the so-called Goethebänkli, from where you can enjoy a marvellous view over Lake Zurich, the island of Ufenau, the Etzel and the Alps. According to legend, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe had himself painted here. This Goethebänkli can therefore also be seen in certain museums. The villa of Ferdinand Stadler, completed in 1850, is architecturally interesting.
Another place of interest is Villa Sunneschy, which was built in 1906 in the Art Nouveau style and extensively remodelled in 2001. The return to the uncovered original substance brought rooms to light, which fascinate visitors with their colourfulness. The villa with its large meadow is now owned by the municipality and is used by the public.
