Stäfa consists of several districts, namely Oetikon directly on the harbour, Grundhalden and Uelikon directly on the Pfannenstiel slope, Oberhusen and Dorf at the confluence of the Schmitten and Dorfbach rivers. The municipality also includes the villages of Kehlhof and Uerikon as well as the hamlet of Mutzmalen between the lake and the Buechhalden vineyards. The shores of Lake Zurich have been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, as evidenced by traces of a settlement found in Uerikon in 1937. As early as 1874, a girl's grave with various grave goods was found in the Oberredlikon district, which was dated to around 400 BC. In 1794/95, the municipality gave its name to a dispute over the political and economic disadvantage of the Zurich countryside compared to the town. In 1837, the upper part of the Stäfner church tower was rebuilt by architect Ferdinand Stadler.

At the beginning of 1952, Robert Barth, founder of the "Milkin-Institut Robert R. Barth" company, began producing the successful Swiss drink Rivella in a former wine shop in Stäfa, which today ranks second behind Coca-Cola as the national drink in Switzerland.
