Almost every household has at least one monitor, not just in the office but also at home. Increasingly, 4K screens are being used, which promise excellent resolution.
However, you can only benefit from a very high pixel density if the screen is clean. In today's article, we will therefore show you how to clean your monitor properly.
Regular dusting and removal of fingerprints
Dust collects on screens. Fortunately, this can be easily removed. To clean the screen properly, all you need is a Microfibre cloth.
To achieve optimum results, it is best to proceed in the following order:
- Firstly, wipe in one movement from top to bottom. The dust will now primarily collect in the lower area.
- In the second step, wipe from one side to the other. Ideally, this leaves the remaining dust in one of the lower corners, where it can be easily removed.
Do not wipe uncontrollably, otherwise you will swirl the dust around and it will quickly settle back on the screen.
If there are fingerprints on the surface, first moisten the microfibre cloth with a little distilled water. However, make sure that the cloth is not soaked, but only slightly damp. It is best to disconnect the screen from the power supply to minimise potential problems caused by moisture.
In the area of ventilation slots or loudspeakers, it is best to work with a fine brush to remove dust residues.
Tip: To ensure that your screen always looks clean and tidy, a certain degree of regularity is required. This applies regardless of whether you use your PC every day or only twice a week. It is therefore best to clean your screen at least once a week.
Clean the monitor gently: use gentle cleaning agents
Flat screens are quite sensitive to Cleaning agents. In any case, you should therefore avoid spraying a cleaner directly onto the display of your screen.
However, it is possible to use special screen cleaners. These only contain cleaners that treat the surface gently and do not contain any abrasive agents.
Ready-made cleaning agents
The advantage of commercially available monitor cleaners is that you know you can't go wrong with this product. If you stick to the dosage and use a fine microfibre cloth, even stubborn stains can be removed.
A disadvantage, however, is the rather high price that most manufacturers charge for their products. However, in view of the fact that you only rarely need the products, the price is relativised over time.
Home remedies as an alternative method to clean the screen
Would you like to clean the monitor properly, but are not convinced by expensive specialised cleaners? No problem, in this case you can buy your Make your own screen cleaner.
To do this, mix vinegar (5%ige solution) and distilled water in a ratio of one to one. Use a spray bottle to spray the mixture onto a microfibre cloth so that it is slightly moistened.
You can then gently clean the screen. You can carefully increase the pressure in areas where there is more dirt.
Avoid mistakes when cleaning monitors
- Sharp cleanersDo not use any harsh cleaning agents. This applies in particular to glass cleaners and disinfectants. Disinfectant wipes are also not suitable for cleaning the monitor. On the contrary, these ensure that the surface is attacked over time. As a result, dust can settle much more easily and cleaning intervals become shorter and shorter.
- Simple clothsCotton cloths, kitchen paper etc. are not suitable for cleaning the screen properly. Fine abrasive particles can lead to scratches on the display.
- Abrasive particles: Scouring cream and other utensils that contain abrasive particles will inevitably cause scratches. Therefore, keep them at a safe distance from your desktop PC, tablet and smartphone.

- Washing-up liquidMany people like to use washing-up liquid to clean the screen without leaving streaks, especially when it comes to stubborn stains. Unfortunately, this almost automatically leaves a smear film on the surface. This can only be removed with plenty of water. However, too much water damages the sensitive electronics, so washing-up liquid is no longer a miracle weapon.
- WaterIn general, there is nothing wrong with a slightly moistened microfibre cloth. However, it is important that you do not use tap water, but distilled water, as conventional tap water usually contains too much limescale and other minerals, which can cause fine scratches and also contribute to the formation of stains.
- Direct sprayingTo protect the screen, only ever spray cleaner onto a cloth and then wipe the screen with the cloth. Otherwise, individual areas of the display will quickly become too heavily contaminated if sprayed directly.
- Strong pressureAvoid high pressure. If an area is difficult to clean, try to scrape it off with a microfibre cloth and your fingernails. Excessive pressure can damage the individual LEDs.
