Final cleaning on handover of the flat

If a change of residence is imminent, attention is usually focussed on the new flat at an early stage. However, the previous flat must be handed over in good condition so that it can be re-let quickly and easily.

However, as there are many things you need to think about during the move, it’s all the nicer if the final clean doesn’t take up too much time. But what is actually necessary and is it worth outsourcing this work?

What is a final cleaning?

The final cleaning always takes place when an existing tenancy ends. It forms the basis for fulfilling the handover protocol so that mutual claims by the tenant and landlord are excluded.

How clean it must look after the final cleaning depends on the condition in which you took over the flat at the beginning of the tenancy. The same condition also applies to the time of handover at the end of the tenancy.

In contrast to many other countries, Switzerland has strict requirements for final cleaning. The flat must therefore generally be immaculately clean, as it is usually marketed accordingly and taken over at the beginning.

Which areas are included in the final cleaning?

During a final cleaning, all areas of the rented flat or property must be cleaned. The most important  Cleaning work which will be displayed on your  personal cleaning list  we have summarized for you briefly and concisely:

– Kitchen: The Cleaning the kitchen This applies to the floor as well as the cupboards and the kitchen appliances themselves. If you have taken over a fully equipped kitchen when you move in, it must be handed over immaculately clean. As a lot of cooking is done in the kitchen (depending on how it is used), this can be very time-consuming. This is especially true when it comes to removing stubborn grease residues, which tend to collect on the kitchen cupboards.
– Bathroom: The bathroom is the next challenge, as there is often a lot to do here. Cleaning is not just limited to a superficial wipe down of all surfaces. Rather, all fittings need to be descaled. The cleaning operation also includes drains, which need to be cleared of hair, and the toilet, which must be free of urine scale. As damp and mould are a major problem for the fabric of the building, landlords take a very close look in the bathroom.
– Living rooms and bedrooms: In the rest of the home, you can usually make progress a little faster. This means vacuuming and mopping the floors and removing dust and dirt from all surfaces.
– Children’s room: Located in one of the Children’s room carpet, extensive cleaning is essential. The spray extraction method is particularly suitable here. The carpet is specifically moistened and the cleaning agent used is then removed again. For invisible stains, cleaning with a hoover is also possible.

The order of final cleaning: What comes first?

Ideally, you should start with a pre-cleaning by vacuuming the entire home first. In this way, you can remove coarse soiling that automatically occurs when the entire home is cleared out.

The private helpers or even the employees of a removal company have to enter the flat several times and go to the removal van. In addition, all the dust fluff hidden under furniture is now noticeable.

Afterwards, it is worth taking the  window cleaning  throughout the house. Pay attention to shutters and window sills, which are usually rarely cleaned, and then start by cleaning all surfaces (lamps, interior window sills, remaining shelves and cupboards, etc.). Go from room to room so that you don’t forget anything.

Finally, the finishing touches are applied in the form of intensive  floor cleaning to remove the last of the shoe prints.

Exceptions to the final cleaning: When is a swept clean flat sufficient?

If you have lived in a rented flat for a long time, the landlord’s requirements may have changed. If remodelling measures are planned, it is sufficient if you hand over the flat swept clean.

It is best to discuss this before you hand over the flat so that you can rule out any unpleasant situations in advance.
