Surely you know the surprise when you're driving in the car and suddenly arrive at work but can't remember the journey? Or the confusion in the shower when you wonder whether you have already used shower gel?
Those moments when your mind wanders off and then you suddenly realise that you've just been completely in autopilot mode mean that we have to use much less energy to get things done. So it's worth developing habits, because it's not just smart devices that have an energy-saving mode. By developing habits, you can get into human energy-saving mode, while your mind is completely somewhere else and the tedious work takes care of itself.
Here are five simple habits that you can use to cleaning instead of having to be done laboriously, is simply carried out automatically. Of course, it takes a while for the habits to become ingrained and it can be a little difficult at first. Over time, however, you are guaranteed to realise that it is really worth not neglecting these simple habits.
1) Make the bed every day
You may have already heard of this habit and with good reason. Making your bed every day generally helps you to develop habits so that after a while you no longer have to remember to make your bed as soon as you get up. You will also have completed an activity on your to-do list shortly after your day begins, can cross it off and experience the motivating feeling that you have been up for less than 5 minutes but have already completed a task.
This leads to an initial sense of achievement every day and is a good start if you want to develop habits that will improve your tidiness in the household or if you simply want to start the day in a good mood.
2) Less is more
By not buying fewer things because you feel like it, you are helping yourself a lot on your way to a household with minimalist clutter. We often think, for example when we see an offer, that we really need an advertised product and can even save some money if we buy it straight away, but just two or three weeks later we think to ourselves that we really didn't need to.
Especially in our globally connected world of online shopping with a few simple clicks, it is not easy to prevent this. But to reduce these not-so-necessary purchases, you can get into the habit of waiting a day before making a purchase that goes beyond your basic needs. This will allow you to sleep on it again and realise whether it was just your whim and the product will no longer be useful in a few weeks anyway.
In any case, this habit can make your home more organised by reducing the amount of things you have lying around that have just been bought but will soon no longer be of any use.
3) Do you find your cleaning type, daily or weekly cleaning, or not at all?
There are 3 different types of people when it comes to cleaning.
1. those who practically always clean, take care of everything straight away and tidy up and therefore never pile up a huge mountain of work. The result: constant activity and daily cleaning, but there is no specific day that has to be completely sacrificed for cleaning. After all, if you always do a little bit, nothing can pile up. A very valuable habit that can definitely pay off big if mastered - and not just when it comes to cleaning.
2. others prefer to have a planned day for cleaning so that they always know when it will be clean again. For example, "Clean Saturday" or "It couldn't be worse on Sunday". That way, at least you don't have to think about what's dirty every day, what you shouldn't put off until tomorrow, etc.
3. others simply prefer not to clean at all. However, this does not necessarily mean that these people have a dirty household, it may be that these people take such good care that nothing gets dirty, have a robot hoover that regularly removes crumbs or simply pay someone to do the cleaning for them. Cleanliness in your household is responsible.
4) From top to bottom, from left to right.
This systematic cleaning gives you more certainty about what you have already cleaned and how much still needs to be done. You are also sure that dust from the kitchen cupboard, for example, does not fall onto the shelf you have just cleaned and you are therefore doing double the work. Just imagine you are reading a great story from one of your favourite books, e-books or the newspaper, we use the same system when reading. From top to bottom, from left to right. Zack, you have made a connection between reading and cleaning and can systematically make everything shiny SUUBER. Now you're ready to spruce up your own four walls.
5) Every thing in its place saves much trouble and many a bad word
This German proverb is not just empty words. Order is after a Study the most frequently cited reason for arguments in a relationship, according to more than 13,000 people surveyed by Elitepartner in June 2020.
It can therefore be assumed that order not only impresses your visitor, but also has a positive effect on your relationship with your sweetheart.
However, if you tend to be a messy person, it can help to start with the little things. For example, don't just throw your clothes over the chair, on the sofa or on the floor, but store them in the wardrobe or put them in the laundry, and put used crockery straight in the dishwasher instead of leaving it on the table for later. Or even habit number 1.
You don't have to be a neat freak to benefit from the advantages of an organised household. Once the habit is ingrained, you no longer have to think about where things are because everything has its own place.
