clean fridge

Something as simple as cleaning the fridge shouldn't be a big deal, should it? Why clean the fridge at all, doesn't it still look clean? And you're right in the middle of the discussion. Our cleaning tips will not only keep your food in the fridge for longer, but also prevent mould and therefore health risks for you and your family!

The fridge is a really great invention. A clean fridge is even better. Because we store a lot of food in it, from dairy products to meat and vegetables. Germs and bacteria can therefore cause them to spoil more quickly. That's why it's important to ensure good hygiene in the fridge. The wrong Cleaning agents can also leave behind toxins that are transferred to the food. Of course, we want to prevent this. So what's the best way to clean a fridge?

To avoid contamination as far as possible, it is advisable not to simply leave food that has just been opened in the fridge. Store perishable foods such as meat, sausage and dairy products in sealable boxes. This will also prevent you from absorbing other odours from the fridge. We all know what it's like when Camembert has been left open in the fridge for days. The odour almost never goes away 👃🧀

Ideally, the refrigerator Clean properly once a month and clean it out completely. You don't have to resort to aggressive chemical cleaners. A simple washing-up liquid is sufficient. Bacteria and germs can also be completely removed from the surface by wiping with a cloth, warm water and surfactants (washing-up liquid).

The best home remedies Another simple way to clean the fridge is with citric acid and vinegar. Bacteria and germs cannot multiply on acidic surfaces. Vinegar cleaner can easily be bought in all supermarkets. Simply add 1-2 tablespoons to 2 litres of hot water. Mixed with a little washing-up liquid, you have a safe cleaning agent for your fridge. This way you leave no toxic chemicals behind and remove dirt easily. Vinegar also removes unpleasant odours. Alternatively, you can also use two tablespoons of baking soda and one litre of warm water as a household cleaning agent. Baking soda also neutralises odours. A disinfectant is not necessary for private households. It is simply more important to clean food regularly and store it correctly.

Clean out your fridge completely. You can schedule a clean when the fridge is not so full. The food can be stored in a cool place in the meantime. However, cleaning usually takes no longer than 15-20 minutes. It is only important that the cold chain is not interrupted for very perishable products, such as raw meat or fish. This is also an ideal opportunity to sort out expired products.

It is very important that you Use fresh, clean cloths for cleaning. Otherwise you will only spread germs and bacteria into the fridge. Always wash your cleaning cloths at a temperature of at least 60° C, if not 90° C, to eliminate bacteria. Especially if they are not washed hot enough, a high number of germs accumulate in cleaning cloths.

Remove all shelves and drawers. Small individual parts can also be cleaned in the dishwasher. Of course, this saves a little effort. Use the clean cloth and your cleaning solution to wipe out the entire refrigerator. Wipe a second time to make sure everything is clean and finally wipe dry with a clean cloth. Don't forget the sensitive areas in the fridge, which are often overlooked. The rubber seal in particular is a favourite place for germs and bacteria. Crumbs and dried liquids also tend to accumulate here. Also check whether black spots have formed and clean them with the solution. This will also show you whether the rubber is still sealing properly. And voilà, your fridge will shine like new again✨.

Now all you have to do is put the individual items and the food back in. Incidentally, these are best stored sorted according to the cold zones 🌡️:

Correctly storing the refrigerator

Top of the list are 🧀cheese, prepared dishes or smoked meats

Then, one level down, other dairy products such as yoghurt, eggs, etc.

The shelf on the glass plate is the coldest place and is suitable for fish 🐟, fresh meat or sausage

Store 🍍fruit and 🍆vegetables separately in the compartments provided in the lower section. It is neither too cold nor too warm here.
